The brake disc is an important part of the car's braking system. By applying the necessary braking force, a car can at any time be safely brought to a halt. This force is generated by the brake disc in combination with the brake pads. The transmission of braking power is redirected onto the wheel hub by the brake discs and brake pads, and from there onto the rims. When braking, the kinetic energy of the car is converted into heat by the friction generated between brake disc and brake pads.
This leads to a speed reduction of the vehicle. In a car, a distinction is made between drum and disc brake. While the disc brake is originally rooted in the world of motorsports and has firmly established itself as the front brake in the 1960s, the rear brake usually is a drum brake.
